Winter visit Gelek Rimpoche 2012
Gelek RimpocheFrom 26 January up to and until 5 February 2012 Gelek Rimpoche will give three initiations at Jewel Heart in Nijmegen, followed by a brief commentary on the practices. First, the initiation of the five Heruka deities, followed by the initiation into the body mandala (both in the tradition of Ghantapa). Finally, the initiation of Vajrayogini (Naro Kacho).

After the initiations Rimpoche will give a brief commentary on the practice of the Three Purities. This practice comes as a daily commitment with the body mandala initiation. Rimpoche will also give a commentary on the Vajrayogini practice.


In the tradition of Heruka, the Chakrasamvara Ghantapa is divided into two initiations; the five outer deities and the inner body mandala. We have been fortunate enough to receive the five outer deitiesfrom Gelek Rimpoche several times before. Initiation into the body mandala is regarded as very profound and is rarely given.

The fact that Rimpoche will give these initiations does not mean that you must take all three. It's good to know the following:

  1. These are all initiations of the highest yoga tantra. they come with the daily obligation of practicing the Six-sessions Guru-Yoga.
  2. On entering Vajrayana you can start with just the initiation of the five Heruka deities.
  3. You can only take Vajrayogini if you have already received a highest yoga tantra initiation (such as the five Heruka deities or Yamantaka). This initiation comes with an additional daily obligation of the short sadhana (2 pages).
  4. The Heruka body mandala is an intensification of Vajrajana with the additional requirement to the daily practice of the Three Purities (5 pages).

For entering in Vajrayana the following conditions have to be present:

  1. Having received Lam Rim teachings (e.g. the Odyssey to Freedom, The Three Principles of the Path to Enlightenment, etc.).
  2. Having a good understanding of the main points of the Lam Rim and the intention to apply these in your daily life, namely:
    - Generating love / compassion for yourself
    - Eliciting love / compassion for others
    - Some development of wisdom
  3. Highly recommended: the completion of 100,000 Migtsema's. If not, then having completed a retreat of 10,000 Migtsema mantras with the intention of completing 100,000 in daily practice. Also recommended is a retreat of 100,000 times taking Refuge.

On 5 February at 16.00 hour Gelek Rimpoche will give a public talk at the Jewel Heart center in Nijmegen. This public talk will also be recorded and broadcasted on the internet as part of the weekly program 'Tibetan Buddhism with Gelek Rimpoche'. Because of the broadcast the audience is requested to be 15 minutes early. The contribution to the costs for the public talk is € 5.
