Thangka Painting
Thangkas (literal meaning: painting on cloth and message) play a central role in the visualization and mediation techniques of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism. By learning how to draw a thangka ourselves, we become more familiar with the very complex and rich Buddhist symbol language. Next to practical work, there is attention for backgrounds, symbolism and visualizations.

On top of the first raster drawing, the figure is drawn step by step, slowly building up the drawing skills. The ultimate goal of the thangka painter is a perfect shape.

The evenings start with a short mediation and/or visualization. Participants need no drawing experience or skills, nor is any advanced Buddhist knowledge required. Each participant is coached individually.

Marian van der Horst, who facilitates this course, is one of the few authorized thangka painters the West currently knows. She gives courses all over the world, including the United States, Russia and Germany.

Marian's Thangka's can be seen on her website.
